Fantasy Lake on October 24, 2015

Steve, Tommy and I went looking for freshwater jellyfish at Fantasy Lake on Saturday, October 24, 2015. In 2011, Steve and I saw a bloom near the south wall just past the point ( 35.91066°, -78.42809°). The point is about a 15 minute swim from Entry 1 and we spent some time searching in the same area where we saw them in 2011. But we did not see any jellies again this year.

Sighting of the freshwater jellyfish is characterized as sporadic and the Nature Conservancy web site says
Researchers aren't quite sure why the occurrences of these capricious creatures are so unpredictable. In some lakes and rivers, freshwater jellyfish may be present one year, but not the next. Then again, there are some waters that boast them almost every year.
Looking through previous reports here on NC Divers, most sightings are in October or November. There were many reports in 2005-2007 and again in 2011. But none since 2011.
Terry Peard's web site shows reports by state and the reports there also show sightings in the years 2005, 2006 and 2011 for Fantasy Lake and Rolesville Quarry.

The visibility has improved and I could just make out the surface while at 25 ffw. There were quite a few other divers out at the quarry, including a Zombie Apocalypse Diver class.

Good day, enjoyed the dive!

Al

I'll keep an eye out for them while we're doing OWT. They are usually out there in November
