9/12-9/13- Morehead Trip Report and Video

We had a great weekend out with Diver Down. I had the rEvo on it's first offshore trip and the conditions were amazing. On Saturday, the seas were flat calm and the vis was 80ft on the U-352 and the Spar. The Spar was absolutely loaded with sharks. They were everywhere. The u-boat was a fun dive as well.

Sunday, the sears picked up a bit and vis was down slightly, but still great conditions overall. I saw the biggest turtle I've ever seen on the Schurz and then we made it back to the u-boat for our second dive.

We had a great time on Diver Down. This was a recreational charter, so we were going to two sites w/o a lot of time in between. Capt. Bobby was very cool about it though, and let Matt and I pull deco as long as they weren't waiting around for us to move spots. So we were in the water as soon as the pool opened and were able to run 40-45 minute RT's on all the dives. So minimal deco, but we got some decent bottom time in. We also finally met Colin (Slaterson) and he and Ryan did a great job as mates. I'll definitely go back out on the Diver Down.

Disclaimers on the vid:
1. Both Matt and I are awful cameramen and it is a POS hand held.
2. I am still very new on the rEvo and rebreathers, and I'm still a bit squirelly on it. So no comments from the peanut gallery :)

That poor turtle looked as if he wanted to say "get off my damn back, I'm trying to swim!".

Wow, the video turned out really well for not having any lighting. Good editing too. I didnt know you took video of the wahoo. That was also fantastic. That was a really big turtle. The big remora was about 3 feet long so the turtle was at least a good 4 feet long. Saturday was a great day to be out on the water. So good that some of the divers took off work so that they could dive on sunday. Hey, when we get good conditions you have to take advantage of it :D.

P.S. Good job on the back kicking. I need to start practicing that.

Great Video,

Question: How many remoras can you fit on one turtle?

Answer: One more.

Unbelieveable weekend. Conditions don't get much better. I wish we would have gotten some footage of those to monster grouper on the Schurz. If only they had come into range

Slaterson, nice to meet you & thanks for getting us tied in & keeping the boat in order.

Ryan, you forgot to mention your newfound buddy :D divers who can talk rb's & ata's are few & far between.

Diver Down is a great operation. Captain Bobby was pretty laid back and acommodating to letting us run some decent profiles on a rec. trip. Will definitely be diving w/ them again.

Thanks for coming. That was probably the best vis I have seen on the spar all summer long.

Ya, when you find someone special like that, you don't go blabbing about it on the internet. That guy was a fountain of knowledge. I think the broader technical diving community has a lot to learn from him- he is re-writing the book on technical diving.

That was a great weekend. You guys ran right passed us on the way in Sunday afternoon about 3 miles north of the sub. Leroy came by first then Diver Down about 20 minutes later. We were on the hook on a ledge about 1/4 mile east of your track. That was a head banging ride home, but worth it to get the diving conditions offshore. Yesterday it was back to dead flat calm like Saturday.

After the labor day weekend it felt weird to be on a boat (saturday) that was not moving around when anchored up.

Ryan and Matt.

Looks like an awesome dive. Wow!...at all the fish and sharks on the Spar.

Ryan...the rEvo looks great. The sidemount on the BO bottles looks awesome.

Thanks for the video. Scott.
Far better it is to dare mightly things, to win glorious triumphs, even through checked by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.

Thanks. I just used a crappy little sony point and shoot (not meant for video), no lights, and a standard sony casing. It's not great but it gets the job done :)
